Quarantine protests in Serbia: 43 police officers injured

Serbian Interior Minister Nebojša Stefanović said on July 8 that 43 policemen were injured during a protest by citizens on July 7 in Belgrade. The Minister stressed that the attack on police officers who daily take care of the safety of citizens is unacceptable and should not be tolerated. According to the Albanian news agency Lapsi, the protests broke out spontaneously after Serbian President Alexander Vucic announced the upcoming curfew, which will last from Friday evening until Monday morning. It was decided to resort to this measure in connection with the increase in detected cases of coronavirus infection. Protesters tried to break into the building of the People's Assembly (parliament). To restrain the crowd, the police used tear gas. Protesters went home only on the second night. Vucic said that from July 7, mass meetings of people will be limited to no more than five people. In total, almost 17 thousand cases of coronavirus infection were recorded in Serbia. 330 patients with COVID-19 died.
