Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine: the Russian Federation should annually pay money for the placement of the Black Sea Fleet in Crimea
Russia should pay Ukraine $100 million annually for the basing of the Black Sea Fleet, Deputy Foreign Minister of Ukraine Vasily Bodnar said in an interview with the Ukrinform news agency on June 22. According to him, payments have not been received since 2014. The agreements should act, since the legal procedures were not respected, and the Russians violated international law by resorting to an attempt to occupy Ukrainian territory, the official said. Bodnar believes that Russia will pay Ukraine money not only under previous agreements, but also for the seizure of territory. According to the news agency, Crimea became part of Russia in March 2014 after a referendum on self-determination. The reason for the referendum was a coup in Kiev. The Ukrainian authorities did not recognize the will of the inhabitants of the peninsula and accused Russia of some kind of occupation.
